Ensuring a Safe Environment for Your Children

October 24, 2017 0

The illegal use or possession of drugs and alcohol is widespread and an issue or a problem in most countries all over the world. Because of this kind of environment, individuals who try and get hooked on these substances start at an early age which also poses a danger to future generations. It is then essential for the community, both public and private sectors, to create a drug and alcohol-free environment. For instance, some companies purchase drug test kits to do drug tests for employees as a campaign for a drug-free workplace.

Ensuring the Safety of your Children in a Drug Congested World

The youth today hear about drugs and alcohol almost everywhere they go. They hear it on the radio, from the shows or movies they watch, and at times may come from their peers and in the community. These can create an impact and may influence your children. Therefore, awareness about these substances must start in the family.

As a parent, there are several ways that you can do to help your children stay away from these kinds of substances and teach them to make better choices.

Dialogue with your children and make them aware of the effects of drugs and alcohol.  Some parents only tell their children to stay away from drugs and alcohol. It is also essential that you explain and educate them about its negative effects on their physical and mental health and how it will affect their future.

Let them know you care. Sometimes, parents fail to spend time with their children. It is important that you give time and make yourselves part of their lives and letting them know that you love and care for them.

Get to know your children. Check on them. Know where they go and what they do. It is also good to know what interests your children. Be it sports, music, poetry, or theater, whatever this may be, as long as it is something that will benefit them positively, invest and improve on that. Not only will it keep them motivated and productive, it will also help in taking their minds away from drugs and alcohol.

Set clear and specific rules and impose them justly. It is not bad to give your children set of rules to follow. This will actually help them to learn to be responsible and make good choices.

Set good examples; what they see, they follow. Be a good example to your children. Show them how to handle stress, how to get along with other people, and so on.

Ensure a safe home. Do not have people in the house who abuse drugs and alcohol. Again, what they see, they may follow especially when it isn’t explained to them well and are not guided accordingly.
